Les Saveurs de Pierre Emile

The best savory tarts and fruit compote sans sucre, just a stone's throw away. We finally went there for lunch, and it was delicious.  Our favorite, the tomato tart, the asparagus, bacon, and dill.  And the couscous looked great. 62 rue de Vaugirard, 6me. Sadly, this old classic is closed permanently. Saveread more

Jardin du Luxumbourg named one of the 60 greatest places in the world

Image via Wikipedia I'm consistently awestruck every time we visit our 'Jardin.'  We're so lucky to have le Jardin du Luxumbourg as our backyard.   Even after more than a decade and a half of coming to this lovely city each year, I have always found this park and its gardens magical.  Lately, I've found myself reading more about the planning…read more

Hotel Villa Madame and the provenance of Rue Madame

I just learned of the provenance of the fabled street, rue Madame, that crosses rue de Vaugirard, where our apartment is located. It was named after Marie-Joseph-Louise, "Madame" de Savoie, the wife of Xavier-Stanilas "Monsieur" de Bourbon, Count of Provence and the future Louis XVIII. In 1790, "Monsieur," the current owner of the Luxembourg Palace, honoured "Madame" by naming the…read more

Chocolatiers Abound

Two more chocolatiers opened in the neighborhood, giving competition to Pierre Hérme. Patrick Roger, voted the best chocolatier in 2000, seems to be guided by the seasons and his whimsies, as my daughter Hadley and I saw the largest 6' chocolate pencils to commemorate the start of the school. Down the street, on rue de Rennes, is another contender, L'Atelier…read more

If I could not stay at our place, this is where I would stay…

So many friends and others interested in traveling to Paris have been calling us to rent our place or to find other rentals and hotels for their summer holiday. Even though the economy is still in the doldrum and they say travel is definitely down, there are still many who are taking advantage of the recession and finding great values…read more

A Local Find

Our friend Laila is so rafinée, with such discriminating taste. We've become closer friends since she and her family moved to Paris from San Francisco. As she is a French local, she has found for us several places in the neighborhood which are definitely great finds. One is a terrific gathering place for families on Sunday brunch. She found for…read more

Paris is a Feast for Families

Paris is lovely for children.... We had three families (twelve people) at Sunday brunch at Le Pain Quotidien where we sat at a grand communal table and enjoyed the all natural menu in a lovely, even joyful ambiance, if you can believe it. It's decorated like a grand épicerie à l'ancienne with an incredibly organic menu. It's the place to…read more

A deux pas du Bon Marché dans le sixiéme arr, le restaurant L´Épi Dupin vous accueille

L'Épi Dupin is my idea of a great restaurant, and a neighborhood restaurant to boot. It has wonderful food, incredibly welcoming and gracious staff. At our dinner, the maître d' was patient making menu recommendation for our children, as well as speaking fluent Japanese to the mother/daughter sitting in the booth and articulate English to the elderly American woman adjacent…read more
